As one of around 300 former moated castles in Germany, Haus Vortlage in Lengerich is one of the last 30 still in existence. The grounds of Haus Vortlage, usually referred to as "Vortlage" for short, have a beautifully landscaped park consisting of a mill, oak avenue, moats and main house (manor and manor house). The former manor was first mentioned in 1241 and was the property of knights for more than 700 years. Since 1978, the estate has been privately owned and serves as a growing museum and cultural centre for conferences and events. With its recognition as a foundation in 2018, it is open to the general public as a cultural and educational site, but can only be visited by appointment.
Tour informationWhether as a monument, as a club headquarters, as a meeting place for designed interaction, as a centre for art and creativity or as a foundation - Haus Vortlage is worth a visit for a wide variety of target groups. Haus Vortlage is increasingly visited as part of the Heimatverein's historical walks. The outdoor and indoor facilities can also be visited by appointment.
History informationOf around 300 former moated castles in Germany, the former knight's estate Haus Vortlage is one of the last 30 still in existence. The house with its historic grounds was owned by knights for around 700 years from 1241 (first documented mention). Built by the Lords of Vortlage, it became a simple manor house in the mid-18th century. In 1978, Line Kossolapow and Anneliese Mannzmann, both current professors at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster, acquired the property. In the course of its high-profile reorganisation in 2018, Haus Vortlage became a foundation under civil law and was recognised as a non-profit organisation.
